Hey Fungi Fam,
I’m back! Last week got away from me, and by the time I thought about the fact that I hadn’t written the article for you all, I was fully off the grid away from all access to the internet. The good news about that though, is we have even more quality articles to cover this week. And we have quite a few new friends that have joined the Fungi Friday community over the past two weeks, so welcome everyone! Let’s jump in.
In today’s email:
A new discovery that could change the planet
A primer on the do’s and do not’s of mushroom foraging
The FDA’s first-ever guidance on studying psychedelics
Iowa Fungi’s Update of the Week
Well, we’re got closer with this first batch than we had most of last season — but still not quite there. This time our issue seemed to have been the humidity levels due to the pond fogger struggling to keep up. So like any good experimenter, we will tweak another variable or two, and try again! Probably won’t be this weekend — but will be down on the farm next week at some point to get another batch going. Sooner or later, we’ll figure this thing out — I promise :)
Scientists discover fast-growing, ‘ingenious’ mushroom that could have a major impact on our planet
What is it? A type of mushroom known as Fomes fomentarius, which grows on the rotting bark of trees and has historically been used mainly as a fire starter.
Why is it important? It could be a major alternative to plastic due to its lightweight, strong, and water-resistant properties. It is also biodegradable, meaning that it will break down naturally in the environment.
How does it work? The mushroom's mycelium, or root-like structure, can be grown on a variety of materials, including agricultural waste, sawdust, and cardboard. The mycelium then binds these materials together, creating a lightweight, strong, and water-resistant material.
What are the implications? The discovery of Fomes fomentarius could have a major impact on the way we produce and consume materials. It could help to reduce our reliance on plastic and plastics pollution. It could also create new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs to develop sustainable products and services.
The researchers who discovered Fomes fomentarius believe that it has the potential to be a "game-changer" in the fight against plastic pollution. They are currently working to develop ways to scale up production of the mushroom so that it can be used to replace plastic in a variety of applications.
The discovery of Fomes fomentarius is a significant step forward in the search for sustainable alternatives to plastic. It is a reminder that nature has the solutions we need to address the climate crisis. We must continue to invest in research and development of these solutions so that we can transition to a more sustainable future.

FDA Issues First Ever Guidance for Research of Psychedelics
The FDA has taken a groundbreaking stride in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) and medical devices by releasing its inaugural guidance on the matter. This article zeroes in on the core aspects of this guidance, offering insights into the FDA's stance on AI-powered software designed for medical applications.
Central to the guidance is the FDA's adoption of a risk-based framework for categorizing AI software. The agency classifies these software systems into three distinct groups, a classification that hinges on the potential impact they could have on patient safety. This approach is aimed at tailoring regulatory oversight to match the level of risk associated with each category, fostering a nuanced perspective on AI's role in healthcare.
Transparency and accountability emerge as pivotal themes in the FDA's guidance. The agency underscores the importance of explaining AI algorithms in a clear and understandable manner, not only for regulatory purposes but also for the comprehension of healthcare professionals and patients. Accountability extends to the ongoing monitoring of AI algorithms, highlighting the dynamic nature of these technologies and the necessity of vigilance to ensure their safety and effectiveness over time.
The guidance delves into the significance of real-world performance data, emphasizing the need for manufacturers to continually assess their AI software's real-world performance as part of the regulatory process. This serves to bridge the gap between pre-market testing and post-market surveillance, ensuring that AI-powered medical devices consistently meet the required standards and expectations.
In a broader context, this guidance paves the way for future regulations in the ever-evolving intersection of AI and healthcare. By navigating the intricate balance between fostering innovation and upholding patient safety, the FDA sets a precedent that acknowledges the transformative potential of AI while safeguarding the well-being of those it serves.
