The Fungi Revolution: How Mushrooms Are Changing Our World
Fungi Friday's - July 7th, 2023 - Issue #87
Fungi Fam,
I have exciting news! But to read it… you’ll have to scroll a bit further (you didn’t think I’d ruin the surprise on sentence number one, did you?) Before we get to that exciting news though, I need to do my regular wishing of a happy Friday to all of you awesome fungi lovers. So Happy Fungi Friday! Did everyone have a good Independence Day? I certainly did… one of my favorite holidays of the year. Now that we’re past it though, my travels are done for at least the next few weeks and i’m back home. As ready as ever to bring you all nothing but the best stories from the world of fungi for the week.
In today’s email we discuss:
Mushroom coffee and it’s potential positive effects on bloating
The first country on Earth to legalize medicinal psilocybin
How fungi play a positive role in our ecosystem
Iowa Fungi’s Update of the Week
Now that you’ve scrolled this far… WE FINALLY PLANTED CROP #1!! The power is working, the first batch of spawn is inoculated, and now we wait. The one caveat with this first crop, just so y’all are aware is that one of the two batches of spawn we decided to use is a bit on the older side. Not sure if that portion will work, but better to try and see than just toss it. So here we are, potentially two to three weeks away from the first fruiting chamber batch of the year. Been a long time coming, but this milestone has arrived… now the fun beings!
Does Mushroom Coffee Actually Help with Bloating? Here's What Health Experts Have to Say
Mushroom coffee is a type of coffee that contains mushrooms, such as chaga, lion's mane, or reishi. These mushrooms are said to have a variety of health benefits, including boosting the immune system, reducing stress, and improving cognitive function.
There is some scientific evidence to support these claims. For example, a study published in the journal "Nutrients" found that chaga mushroom extract increased the production of white blood cells, which are important for fighting infection. Another study, published in the journal "Frontiers in Nutrition," found that lion's mane mushroom extract improved cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment.
However, more research is needed to confirm the long-term safety and efficacy of mushroom coffee. If you are considering trying mushroom coffee, it is important to talk to your doctor first.
Here are some of the potential benefits of mushroom coffee:
Boosts the immune system
Reduces stress
Improves cognitive function
May help with weight loss
May help with gut health
May help with sleep
Mushroom coffee is a relatively new trend, so there is still much that we don't know about its benefits and risks. However, the preliminary research is promising, and mushroom coffee may be a safe and effective way to improve your overall health.
If you are interested in trying mushroom coffee, there are a few brands that you can find online or in some health food stores. When choosing a mushroom coffee, it is important to read the label carefully to make sure that it contains the mushrooms that you are interested in. You should also start with a small amount and gradually increase your intake to see how your body reacts.

Psychedelic Tourism: Jamaica’s Growing Magic Mushroom Retreat Industry
Breaking The Stigma And Reaping The Medical Benefits: Decriminalizing Psilocybin
Australia becomes first country to legalise medical psychedelics
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia's drug regulator, has approved the use of two psychedelic drugs, MDMA and psilocybin, to treat a range of mental health conditions, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anorexia nervosa.
This is a major breakthrough for the field of psychedelic medicine, which has been gaining momentum in recent years as researchers explore the potential of these drugs to treat a variety of mental health conditions.
MDMA, also known as ecstasy, is a stimulant drug that has been shown to be effective in treating PTSD. Psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, has been shown to be effective in treating depression and anorexia nervosa.
The TGA's decision to approve these drugs for medical use is a significant step forward in the fight against mental illness. It will allow more patients to access these potentially life-changing treatments.
The approval of MDMA and psilocybin for medical use in Australia is a major victory for the psychedelic medicine movement. It is a sign that the world is finally starting to take these drugs seriously as potential treatments for mental health conditions.
This is just the beginning. As more research is conducted, we can expect to see even more psychedelic drugs approved for medical use in the years to come. This could have a major impact on the way we treat mental illness, and it could help millions of people around the world.

Fungi: The Hidden Heroes of Ecosystems
Fungi are everywhere. They're in the soil, on our food, and even in our bodies. But most of us don't know much about them. That's a shame, because fungi are actually essential to life on Earth.
Fungi play a vital role in ecosystems. They help to decompose dead organic matter, which returns nutrients to the soil. They also form symbiotic relationships with plants, which help the plants to grow better. Fungi even produce antibiotics, which can help to fight disease.
In short, fungi are the unsung heroes of ecosystems. They're quietly working behind the scenes to keep our planet healthy. But their importance is only starting to be recognized.
Here are some of the ways that fungi are helping to save the planet:
They're being used to clean up pollution.
They're being used to develop new biofuels.
They're being used to create new medicines.
Fungi are a powerful force for good. And as we learn more about them, we're discovering even more ways to harness their power.
So next time you see a mushroom, take a moment to appreciate it. It's not just a pretty fungus. It's a hidden hero that's helping to keep our planet healthy.
