Iowa Fungi’s Update of the Week
With it being Spring, it’s also officially the final weekend of the year without a product “in progress” for the boys here at Iowa Fungi — in fact, as i’m typing this out, I just received a notice that the first spawn delivery of the year should be here by Friday. Few more things to iron out this weekend and next and we’ll be off to the races. Blue oyster mushrooms are on the way, let’s go!!!
Ecologists are infecting trees with fungi to make them age prematurely
Ecologists are intentionally infecting trees with fungi to study the effects of premature aging on forests. By infecting trees with decay-causing fungi, researchers observed changes in the wood structure of trees, such as decreased wood density and increased porosity. These changes can make trees more susceptible to environmental stressors, potentially leading to premature death.
The research has important implications for forest management as it suggests that preventing fungal infections could help prolong the lives of trees and maintain healthier forests. The study aims to understand how forests respond to environmental change and how to prevent premature aging. The findings also show that fungal infections are a significant cause of tree decay, which affects forest health and survival. Overall, the study highlights the importance of maintaining healthy forests for the ecological and economic benefits they provide.

How and Why You Should Incorporate Mushroom into Your Health Regimen
Move over kale, mushrooms are the new superfood in town. According to a recent article, mushrooms are a low-calorie, high-fiber, and antioxidant-rich addition to your diet that can help fight inflammation and disease. They contain beta-glucans that can boost the immune system and have specific health benefits such as lowering cholesterol and having neuroprotective properties.
The article suggests adding mushrooms to your meals as a meat substitute or in pasta dishes. So, why not swap your morning smoothie for a mushroom omelet and get an extra dose of nutrients?

Mushrooms Are Powering Killer Innovations. And No, Not the Zombie Apocalypse Kind.
Look out zombies, fungi are the new stars of innovation. While some fungi may have negative connotations, a growing number of scientists and entrepreneurs are exploring the potential of fungi in various fields, from biotechnology and food to materials and textiles.
Fungi are used to create leather substitutes, packaging, and building materials, among others. They are also being researched for their medicinal properties, including as a source of antibiotics and cancer treatments. In addition, fungi can help with environmental remediation, such as cleaning up oil spills and breaking down plastics. As more people recognize the versatility and sustainability of fungi, there is potential for them to become a significant part of the global economy.
