Welcome back, Fungi Fam!
It’s officially that time of week again, it’s Fungi Friday! We’ve finally made it to Q2 2023, April 1st is tomorrow! (Reminder — look out for those jokesters in your life so you don’t fall for their pranks.)
With quarter number two set to begin, we’re finishing quarter one with a post focused around mushrooms and health. Health you ask? Aren’t we always talking about mushrooms and their wide array of health benefits? — Yes, for the most part, but this particular post is going to be focused around GUT HEALTH (feature #1), followed by MENTAL HEALTH (feature #2). Was a light news week, but these two articles are certainly still worth sharing, so we hope you enjoy.
Let’s get into it!

Iowa Fungi’s Update of the Week
The boys over at Iowa Fungi have been busy, lining up all of the necessary pieces as we begin year number two of this experiment! Slight change of plans due to timing, we won’t actually be starting our first batch of product until after Easter (which is next weekend, for those unaware), but that’s alright… just gives us another week to make sure everything is in place. And we certainly are close!
The fascinating world of gut fungi and its relevance for health
Gut fungi are microorganisms that live in the digestive tract of humans and animals. Recent research has revealed that these fungi play a crucial role in maintaining gut health and overall well-being.
One study found that individuals with inflammatory bowel disease had a higher abundance of certain gut fungi, suggesting a possible link between gut fungi and the development of this condition. Another study suggested that certain gut fungi can help to break down dietary fiber, which is essential for maintaining a healthy gut.
The balance of gut fungi is also important for maintaining a healthy immune system. Research has shown that an imbalance in gut fungi can lead to an increased risk of infections and autoimmune diseases.
Several factors, such as diet, stress, and medication, can affect the balance of gut fungi. Probiotics and prebiotics, which are available in supplement form or in certain foods, can help to promote the growth of beneficial gut fungi.
Overall, the study of gut fungi is a rapidly growing field that has the potential to lead to new treatments and therapies for a range of health conditions.
Psychedelic Spotlight
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring compound found in certain types of mushrooms, known as "magic mushrooms" or "shrooms." When ingested, psilocybin can produce a range of psychological effects, including altered perceptions, vivid hallucinations, and changes in mood and thought patterns.
Recent research has suggested that psilocybin may have therapeutic potential for treating a range of mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. However, there are still concerns about the potential for adverse effects, as well as the legality of using psilocybin and related compounds. Curious to learn more? Click here!
Psychedelics and Cognition: A New Look
A recent study has explored the potential benefits of psychedelic drugs, such as psilocybin and LSD, on cognitive function. The study suggests that these drugs may have the potential to improve certain aspects of cognitive function, including creativity and problem-solving abilities.
The study also suggests that psychedelic drugs may be useful in treating certain mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety. Some research has suggested that these drugs may be able to help patients break out of negative thought patterns and gain a new perspective on their situation.
However, the study notes that more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of using psychedelic drugs in this way. There are still concerns about the potential for adverse effects, such as hallucinations and anxiety, as well as the potential for long-term psychological effects.
Despite these concerns, the study suggests that there is a growing interest in exploring the potential benefits of psychedelic drugs in a therapeutic context. As more research is conducted in this area, it is possible that these drugs may become a more widely accepted tool for treating a range of mental health conditions.
