Hello there, Fungi Friday fans… happy Friday! Another week has come and gone and you are oh so close to the weekend. Should be an exciting weekend at that… the Masters are in full swing, and the boys at Iowa Fungi are currently in full on build out mode, most likely installing a few solar panels on the fungi fortress as you read this. Who knows, might even grace the newsletter with a few progress pictures in next weeks issue. Growing season is quickly approaching, and the fun is about to begin…
So let’s get in to the articles!
Fungi Appear to Talk in a Language Similar to Humans
It has long been assumed, and recently been proven, that plants are able to communicate with one another. However, in a recent study out of West England, it now appears that fungi too, might be similarly capable of such communication. By studying electrical activity within the species, a researcher claims to have reconstructed nearly 50 “words” of different complexities from the specimen. While it is not known what they are saying, and may not be possible to know what for many more years, this article is still fascinating in a sense that everything is interconnected and there is still so much we humans just simply don’t know!
New research sheds light on how psilocybin influences sleeping patterns
The second article of week hops over to the psilocybin world and examines a mouse study looking into the drug’s effects on sleep. From serotonin signaling and synaptic plasticity, it seems that a psychedelic trip can have some large effects on sleep states and brain activity. As we know, sleep is an essential part of physiology, and it shouldn’t be neglected when thinking about health, particularly in the brain. Overall, there seems to be an interesting relationship here that needs to be studied further, especially when it comes to utilizing psychedelics to treat mental illness.
Eating More Mushroom is Good For Your Gut As Edible Fungi Lower Heath Risks
Make no mistake, many of the health related issues facing this country can be directly linked back to the western style diet that has come to be the norm these days. That being said, researchers now believe that adding more of our favorite fungi here and there may be able to help. You see, many dietary issues stem from poor gut health, something fungi are known to positively effect. Fungi may actually be able to reshape the entire microbiome, improving overall health along the way!
