Hey Fungi Friday’s Fans! Happy close to Q1. Hard to believe a quarter of the fiscal year 2022 has already come and gone, but that’s life. Been a busy week over here for the boys at Iowa Fungi’s, our solar panels came in and we are anxiously prepping to build out the trailer and get growing. Should be putting some wheels in motion over the next month, and will be sure to update you all as we do!
Now, let’s get in to this week featured articles!
These plastic-hungry fungi in China might just be the key to solving the world’s waste
Plastic and rubber account for nearly 44% of the worlds waste. However for the past 12 years, a researcher in the Yunnan province of China has been studying a certain species of fungi for its ability to digest both of these substances. And just recently, the researcher and his team have found four new species that are showing promise.
In their initial tests, they now believe that these certain fungi can break down both polyurethane and latex. And while these studies are certainly in the very early days, the scientists are optimistic that once they have an idea of the rate of degradation and mass loss, that these fantastic fungi will be of many uses in the race to cleanup our Earth. Overall, seems like a story certainly worth watching, as this is yet another instance of our favorite little fungi providing benefit to this beautiful spinning planet we call home.
Mushrooms – A True Culinary Champignon
Had a fan of the newsletter reach out to me after last week’s edition where we featured a whole array of health benefits of mushrooms, stating that he’d like to get into them, but had never liked their texture and didn’t know where to start. Well, this article not only goes into more “health benefits”, but also goes into the textures, tastes and pairings of many of our favorites, as well as quite a few i’m now interested to try. Oh, and did I mention it’s all written by a professional culinary chef? Because it is, so you know it must be some legit advice. So check it out, try it out and when you do, let us know how yummy it was!
New research shows properties in magic mushrooms could have long-lasting benefits to treat depression
And for the last featured article of this week, some more new research on long lasting positive results in treating depression with psychedelics. Nothing that we haven’t necessarily covered on this rag before, but the more positive research studies to come out, the more positive momentum towards funding, regulatory clarity and overall positive growth in the industry. Something tells me it’s going to be a good decade to be in the fungi industry and we are certainly just getting started!
