Five months down, seven months to go… oh how fast this year seems to be flying by. Hey there, Fungi Friday fans, we’re back with another weekly edition.
Not much excitement to report yet this week. Checked in on the mushrooms last weekend, but we were a bit low on humidity and are still having some intermittent power issues. Also happened to find a mouse in the trailer, so that’s always fun… something about growing in the middle of nowhere attracts all of the critters. Nothing to worry about though, we knew getting into this thing it’d be one big experiment. Headed back down this weekend to re-position the humidifier, check on the crop and potentially re-wire the setup, in hopes of finally resolving this power issue.
We’ll get this right though… and sooner or later, we will have mushrooms! For now though, let’s get on to the stories of the week.
5 Next-Generation Psychedelics Entering Clinical Trials This Year
Article number one this week tackles some of the more exciting up and coming scientific breakthroughs in the psychedelic world. As the world grapples with multiple mental health crises, including depression and anxiety, PTSD, and rising suicide rates, psychedelics have shown great promise in early clinical trials.
Psilocybin, ibogaine, and DMT have all been shown to have promise, but also potential downsides in treating these particular issues, so it should be interesting to monitor as these studies start to show results. A few of the featured trials reported on in the article include:
18-MC / MM-110: Entering a Phase 2a Trial
CYB003: Entering a Phase 1/2a Trial
SPL028: Entering a Phase 1 Trial
FT-104: Entering a Phase 1 Trial
MEAI: Entering a Phase 1 Trial
While these trials are all very early on in their lifecycle, it’s certainly exciting to see so many different frontiers being researched in what was not too long ago an industry shunned by the mainstream scientific community. Check out the article to read more into each of these studies if they’re something of interest!
Power of fungi more than a fairytale
Moving off of the psychedelic variety, the second feature of the week happens to cover some other varieties of mushrooms and their benefits to both humans and the planet as a whole. Whether they are helping to create fertile soil, helping plants and crops access nutrients and water, recycling organic matter or creating hollowed out habitats for wildlife, mushrooms are all over different ecosystems benefiting the other living organisms around them.
And of course, with all of these benefits, fungi related demand is generating tons of buzz and plenty of business. Whether it be in the generation of vegan leather, biodegradable bricks and concrete or consumable meat alternatives, mushrooms sure make a widely diverse, sustainable option for so many use cases that are a part of regular human life.
Popadelics™ Crunchy Mushroom Chips Debuts at the 2022 Summer Fancy Food Show
And finally, for our last feature of the week, yet another use case of mushrooms that I do not believe we’ve covered on this small corner of the internet quite yet: mushroom chips! These tasty treats will be making their debut next week at the 2022 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York, NY. The show features specialty food and drink from all over the world and hosts over 10,000 annual attendees.
The company behind Popadelics, Fun-Gal Snacks, is a NYC based specialty food brand with a mission to create innovative snacks harnessing the power of mushrooms and other “unloved” veggies. And their flagship product, is a shiitake mushrooms based modern superfood for the health-conscious individual who loves delicious, better-for-you snack food options. Even as i’m typing this, I can’t deny that I’m certainly interested, so i’ll definitely be on the lookout for these once they hit wider distribution!
