Hey Fungi Fam,
Happy September and Happy Fungi Friday. It’s officially Labor Day weekend here in the States, and with that, summer is winding down and we are quickly approaching fall. College football is back, the NFL will follow shortly, the mushroom season is coming to a close and the final third of fiscal year 2023 has begun.
If you’re anything like me, you can hardly believe how fast this summer flew by so quickly. That’s how Summer seems to go though, so for now, let’s enjoy the rest of it that we have left, and let’s also learn a little bit about fungi along the way. On to today’s articles.

Iowa Fungi’s Update of the Week
Crop number two is officially underway, but not without its own hiccups. Naturally, when our main issue originally was lack of power and thus lack of humidity, we decided to over-adjust. Now we have so much humidity that it caused us to flood the power strip and ultimately trip the breaker. Have no fear though, a bit of troubleshooting and a reconfiguration of the power supply setup and we are seemingly good to go! One of the team members will be down at the farm to check on the crop this upcoming weekend, and as long as all is operating as expected, should have some mushrooms popping up by the third week of September!
Made from fungi, this vegan leather can self-heal holes or rips
Fungi can be used to make vegan leather that can self-heal holes or rips. This new type of leather is made from the rootlike mycelium of a fungus called Phellinus ellipsoideus. The mycelium is processed into a material that is similar to leather in appearance and feel.
**The self-healing properties of the leather come from the fungus's ability to produce chitin, a natural polymer that is also found in insect exoskeletons. When the leather is damaged, the chitin molecules can come together and repair the damage.
The new leather is still in the early stages of development, but it has the potential to be a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional leather. It is also possible that the self-healing properties of the leather could be used to create other materials, such as bandages or clothing.
Here are some additional details from the article:
The leather is made by growing the mycelium in a controlled environment.
The mycelium is then processed into a sheet of material.
The material is then dyed and finished to resemble leather.
The leather is still being tested, but it has shown promise in terms of its durability and self-healing properties.
The development of this new type of leather is a promising step towards a more sustainable future. It could help to reduce the demand for animal leather, which is a major contributor to environmental pollution.
